How Does It Work?

1. The Surgery:

A vascular surgeon creates a connection between an artery and a vein, usually in the arm.

This allows the vein to grow larger and stronger, making it suitable for repeated needle insertions during dialysis.

2. Maturation Period:

The fistula needs 4–8 weeks to mature before it can be used.

During this time, the vein strengthens to handle the increased blood flow.

3. Using the Fistula:

During dialysis, needles are inserted into the fistula to access your blood.

The blood is then filtered through the dialysis machine and returned to your body.

Why Choose an AV Fistula?

Durability: Lasts longer than other access types (like catheters or grafts).

Lower Risk of Infection: Safer and more reliable for long-term use.

Better Blood Flow: Ensures efficient dialysis sessions.

Less Maintenance: Once healed, it requires minimal intervention.

Who is it For?

An AV fistula is ideal for:

Patients who need long-term dialysis treatment.

Individuals seeking the safest and most durable access option.

Those who want to reduce the risk of complications compared to other access types.
